Masks are used in various dramatic rituals in Sri Lanka. These can be classified as mythological, demonic, animal-spirit and human figures. The traditional Mask Carving in Mirissa goes back more than 300 years and has been continued by twelve generations. There are 72 different masks for 72 dances. (Kolam Natum) There are 5 special masks which can be found only at Mirissa, namely; 1. Narasinghe Raksha, 2. Panchanari Getaya, 3 Narilatha Getaya, 4. Kara Pita Kolama, and 5. Deva Giri Kolama. Although the town of Ambalangoda along the Southern Coast road has established its name as the home of devil dancing and mask making traditions that have been carried out for generations, Mirissa too has a long tradition of mask making. These two groups perform at various contests, often in competition. Special performances of devil dancing is organized to those interested parties by M. Martin Amarasinghe, Udupila.
There is a huge mound adjoining the temple which is believed to be an ancient Stupa. This Viharaya had been established in the early nineteenth century by Ven Thiranagama Buddharakkhitha Thero, and the current chief incumbent is Ven. Tharapeiriye Saranasiri Thero. There is a well maintained library at the temple where a treasure of ancient books including Ola leaf books are preserved. The other important feature in this temple is the paintings on the walls of the Viharaya, which belong to the Kandyan era. Those paintings depict stories of the birth of Buddha and Jataka stories for people to leam the consequences of good and bad actions.
