This is very popular with tourists of all ages. It is 98 km from Colombo. There are hundreds of mid-ranged hotels and guest houses, pubs, restaurants and shopping places. There are many places here offering diving lessons, and a visit to its vast coral reef would be an unforgettable experience Hikkaduwa lake too is famous for boat riding. Visitors who wish to get closer to the corals can do so, or there are boats with glass bottoms to go closer and view corals
This is situated behind the public market in town. Hikkaduwa natural bay is used by the fishermen for traditional fishing as well as motor boat fishing. You can purchase fresh fish from the market adjoining the harbour
This park is one of the two marine national parks in Sri Lanka which contains a fringing coral reef with a high degree of biodiversity. Visitors can mingle with the beauty of Hikkaduwa via snorkeling, diving, surfing and coral viewing through glass bottom boats. The best season for surfing is the dry season that lasts from November to March. You can enter the beach buying a ticket and there are plenty of boats for rides.
This is a beautiful temple on a hill at Dodanduwa and is visible from the Galle main road. The image house can be reached by a flight of steps. The architecture of the image house is reminiscent of European church architecture. The temple archives has a collection of valuable documents of Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala thero, Anagarika Dharmapala, Colonol Olcott and many Dutch period documents.
Totagamuwa Raja Maha Viharaya (Ancient Temple)This is situated 0.75 km away from the A2 Galle Road. Turn at the 96th-97th km posts. The famous Buddhist monk Thotagamuwe Sri Rahula thero (1408- 1491) who wrote 'Parevi Sandeshaya, Kavyasekeraya, Salalihini Sandeshaya' lived here. This viharaya had been built during the Anuradhapura kingdom. Many kings from the Anuradhapura period to the Kandyan period have given royal patronage to the temple. There are two image houses, stupa, bodhiya, and many ruins and inscriptions. You also can see paintings and some are of European art which is very unusual. This Viharaya has been declared as an archaeological monument.
