Belihul Oya is on the Ratnapura Badulla road (A4) 16 km from Balangoda town. This is a place for local and foreign visitors and there are plenty of tourist resorts. There are eco-tour operators organizing nature walks, trails, hiking, biking around Belihul Oya. The cool climate and the mountain cliff in the surrounding area and the Belihul Oya river are the main attractions. This is a central point to visit Bambarakanda water falls, World's End, Samanalawewa, and other historic places like Kuragala and Budugala.
This picturesque small village is situated 160 km away from Colombo. The beautiful hillside location is a climatically transitional area, linking both the dry and wet zones and the hill country and low country at an altitude of less than 1500m. One of the richest bio-diversity spots in Sri Lanka, it is a perfect location for nature lovers. There is a 2MW run-off-river plant which utilizes water from the Belihul Oya River to supply energy to the national grid in Sri Lanka. The plant generates an average annual output of 10 GWh. This project is done by a private company, SN Power.
You can visit Sri Lanka's highest water fall, Bambarakanda Water fall which is 790 ft high. This is 4900 ft above sea level. The water fall starts from Mahaeliya (Horton Plains) the leading strict reserve in the country. The roadway from Kalupahana to Bambarakanda (Turn left between 172 173 km posts) is rough to drive so a 4WD is recommended; you have to drive about 20 min, approx. 5 km. On this same road you can drive to Horton Plains through a tea estate. Since the road is not well constructed it is highly advised to refrain from taking the route till properly done.
Visitors can get assistance from the hotels they stay for nature trails. Eco Team nature activities are very strong in this area, and they also run the River Garden Resort. There are many places along the Belihul Oya for river bathing.
