Kalpitiya is located 150 km north of the capital, Colombo. Kalpitiya, - a coastal area is one of the most beautiful coastal areas located in the West coast of Sri Lanka. This area is proposed to be developed as a special Tourist Zone. There are 14 Islands in the proposed zone. Kalpitiya is a peninsula that separates the Puttalam lagoon from the Indian Ocean and is a marine sanctuary with a diversity of habitats ranging from bar reefs, flat coastal plains, saltpans, mangroves swamps, salt marshes and vast sand dune beaches. The proposed zone is situated at Kalpitiya in the Puttalam District of the North Western Province of Sri Lanka. The 'Bar Reef' of Kalpitiya is about a one hour boat ride from Kalpitiya. The Bar Reef is a must visit for scuba divers and snorkelers.
The remains of the Dutch Fort and St Peter's Kerk church in Kalpitiya are an excellent testimonial to colonial history. The Fort was built in 1667 by the Portuguese. The fort is located at the northern tip of the narrow land that stretches to the north for 50 km beyond Puttalam, parallel to the mainland.
Kalpitiya is the best place for watching dolphins during the season between November - March. Boat tours for dolphin watching are carried out by trained and certified guides. All these guides are capable of briefing on the types of Dolphins. A boat can carry six persons and the average cost is about Rs.15,000/- per boat.
Several types of dolphins are seen in Kalpitiya sea, including Spinner Dolphins, Bottlenose Dolphins, Risso's Dolphin and Indo-Pacific Humpback. You can routinely see hundreds and even thousands.
The waters are relatively calm from November to March, when the dolphins are likely to be pleasant. Most sightings occur inside the Bar Reef and early in the morning.
Kalpitiya is popular for whale watching. Whales are regularly seen around the Kalpitiya Peninsula. Five species of whales inhabit the deeper waters along the coastline of Sri Lanka at Kalpitiya. Boat trips take off from Kalpitiya to off-shore sites to catch the sights of Sperm whales and occasionally Blue whales. The Sperm whale is the largest of the toothed whales in the world. The Blue whale is the largest and heaviest animal in the world. The season to view the Sperm Whale at Kalpitiya Peninsula is between December and mid-April.
St. Anne's Church in Thalawila attracts the biggest catholic population during the feast time. A lighthouse was constructed at the premises of the St. Anne's Church in Thalawila to mark its 250th anniversary in 2012. This was constructed as a relief to the fishing community.
The annual Thalawila St. Anne's Church Festival is held in August. This is one of the major Church Festivals in Sri Lanka.
